Does this really merit the label “news” anymore–Masters Women lifters breaking New England Records?!? Well, I had to append some kind of title to this article! (Actually, it may be noteworthy that relatively few Records tumbled!) The RWL Weightlifting Memorial Day Weekend competition, held in Franklin, Massachusetts on Saturday May 27, 2017 was so well stocked with athletes that Meet Director/RWL Head Coach Dr. Ellyn Robinson announced that next year’s event on this holiday weekend will be spread over two days! For my money, the outstanding achievement was notched by Coleen Crawford (Charles River Barbell, MA) in the 63 Kilos Class of our youngest Masters Age Group. Thirty-five-years-young Coleen broke the very recently set Clean & Jerk mark of Gwen Sisto by 5 kgs., hoisting 95 kgs. overhead to cap a flawless Jerk series after struggling a bit in the Snatch. The Total of 170 kgs. also gave Coleen possession of that mark. I think we had a visit from Wonder Woman a week before her movie opened! Joining the Records parade were Danamarie Movsessian (Unattached), Christine Ravener (Unattached) and Andrea Whalen (Armory Barbell, resides in MA). Ms. Movsessian, having just entered Age Group 40-44 this year, simply demolished the previous Records in 63 Kilos Bodyweight Class. Snatch–66 kgs., Clean & Jerk–87 kgs., Total–153 kgs.! Christine Ravener bumped up her own C&J and Total standards in Age Group 55-59/69 Kilos Class to 62 and 106 kgs. respectively. Ms. Whalen‘s performance of: Snatch–54 kgs., Clean & Jerk–73 kgs., Total–127 kgs. gained her the previously vacant Records for Age Group 45-49/90 Kilos Class.

In other news, Kathleen ‘Kat’ O’Neill (Unattached, MA) took 4th Place in the USAW University and Under 25 Championships, 69 Kilos Class with Total of 183 kgs. The competition was held in Gainesville, FL in early April. If Ms. O’Neill can add 5 kgs. to her Clean & Jerk of 106 in Gainesville she can erase one of the longest-standing New England Records, belonging to Suzanne Leathers!  Nice going, ‘Kat’! Also notable was the presence of Fenner Lamm, a former New England lifter now representing Lindenwood University. Fenner, still a Junior (age 20), came in 7th in the 90 Kilos Class with a Total of 162 kgs. Congratulations!

I have been informed that Ivan Rojas and Gwen Sisto, owners of Risto Sports, have packed their things and moved all the way from Maine to Florida so Gwen can take a new job down there. That’s quite a move! We will miss you guys here in New England and we wish you the greatest possible success going forward!
