MASTERS RECORDS DEMOLISHED IN NEW HAMPSHIRE!
Some remarkable things transpired in Lebanon, NH on January 20 at the Thor’s Stone Winter 2018 Weightlifting Meet (Meet Director: Darrin Clement). First, Jane Higgins answered the question I’d been posing to myself for a while (to wit, “Whatever became of Jane Higgins?”) with a six-for-six performance in 53 Kilos Class/Age Group 70-74. She filled vacant New England Records slots there with a Snatch of 30 kgs., Clean & Jerk of 39, Total of 69 kgs. But the really remarkable factor is that she now holds the heaviest lifts in that Age Group for all the lifts, regardless of Bodyweight Class!! That is a fabulous performance! Valerie Thompson, in Age Group 60-64/75 Kilos Class, also set a new Clean & Jerk mark of 48 kgs., giving her a Record Total of 83. On the Men’s Masters side, Leon Pelletier, in Age Group 75-79/85 Kilos Class (up a Class from usual), blew away the Snatch Record held by the late Armand Turgeon by putting up a terrific 50 kgs.! This 10-kilo leap over the old Record powered Leon to a new Total mark of 105. Huge congratulations to all these record-setters, who lift for the sponsoring team, Carl Wallin‘s Thor’s Stone Athletic Club!
IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT WEIGH-INS OF YOUNG ATHLETES
Word should have reached USAW Members with valid email addresses by now about the new USAW rule governing the weigh-ins of Youth Athletes ages 13 and under. Such athletes, male and female, MUST remain clothed in the one-piece lifting outfit during the weigh-in. There is a practical implication to this situation: if an athlete weighs in at just slightly over the Bodyweight Class he/she intends to compete in, that athlete can no longer shed the excess weight by removing additional clothing. In other words, these Youth Athletes may NOT weigh-in in underwear only, or nude! Athletes, their coaches and their parents/guardians should bear this in mind in terms of diet leading up to a competition.
DENIS RENO UPDATE
Unless a last-minute snag arose to waylay his plans, Denis is on a cruise ship right now! Quite a way to start recuperating from quadruple-bypass heart surgery, eh?!? That’s our Denis! He stated in his Weightlifter’s Newsletter that he plans to be able to help administer the Atlantic States Open event in Salem, MA on President’s Day weekend. Speaking of which…
ATLANTIC STATES OPEN UPDATE!
I understand from Meet Director Dave Lussier that sign-up for this event, scheduled for February 17 and 18, is going slowly. The meet may be reduced to a one-day event (just the Saturday) as a result. Remember, there is no online registration. If you plan to compete, you should download, print out and snail-mail in your Entry Form ASAP! (see link to .PDF of form in earlier posts)
